C2/2001R Worker run over by backing train in Helsinki on 11 January, 2001Text version

On Thursday January 11, 2001, a worker installing a turnout heating cable was run over on Helsinki railway yard by an accompanied train being moved from Helsinki railway yard towards Ilmala Coach Depot. In the accident the worker was seriously injured.

The accident was caused by the worker failing to perceive the train approaching with a coach in front.

To prevent corresponding accidents the Accident Investigation Board of Finland recommends that a safety officer be regularly assigned to monitor work tasks performed within the structure gauge on Helsinki railway in cases safety is not secured by track reservation.
