M2021-A3 Fire in the auxiliary engine room of MS Finnmaster in Hull, The United Kingdom, on 19 September 2021

Referring to section 12(2) of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011), the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, has decided to appoint its authorised representative to assist in the safety investigation started by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) of the United Kingdom.

A fire occurred in the auxiliary engine room of MS Finnmaster, which sails under the Finnish flag, in Hull, the United Kingdom, on 19 September 2021. As a result of the fire, the auxiliary engine room of the vessel was damaged badly enough to be unusable. According to Chapter 7 of the IMO Casualty Investigation Code (MSC.255(84)), the Safety Investigation Authority and MAIB have agreed that as an exception to the flag state principle and following the coastal state principle, MAIB will lead the safety investigation into the accident while the Safety Investigation Authority assists in the investigation.

Safety Investigator Ilkka Kervinen from the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, is appointed as the authorised representative.
