Y2023-01 The collapse of a bridge in Espoo on 11 May 2023

Under section 2, subsection 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011), the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, has initiated an investigation into the collapse of a footbridge in Espoo on 11 May 2023.

The accident occurred, when a temporary scaffolding bridge collapsed while a group of schoolchildren were on the bridge. They fell approximately five metres along with the bridge structures, and as a result, 24 people sustained injuries that required hospital treatment.

Pekka Aho, M.Sc. (Admin.), has been appointed as the Head of the Investigation Team, with Olli Borg, M.Sc. (Tech.), Kim Louhula, M.Sc. (Tech.), Eero Nyman, M.Sc. (Admin.), and Mikko Virtanen, a teacher of emergency medical services, as its members. Chief Safety Investigator Kai Valonen will serve as the Investigator-in-Charge.
