C10/​1996R Dan­ger­ous Sit­u­a­tion in Rail Traf­fic be­tween Uusikylä and Kausala, on Sep­tem­ber 11, 1996

A risk of collision of three trains running in succession occurred between Uusikylä and Kausala stations on the section of line between Lahti and Kouvola, on Wednesday, September 11, 1996. The situation was generated as a result of the corresbonding block signals operating as non conforming with the real traffic situation. This again was due to a disturbance in the power suply; the power failure first caused an extinction of the signals and then their displaying a stop signal aspect.

An immediate risk was generated as the pilot of the the train running in the middle, started to continue driving upon having misinterpreted the aspect of the extinguished signal.

A collision was avoided by the movements inspector giving the pilots running instructions over a radio telephone, as per each block section until the signals resumed their regular operation.
