The inclusion of critical and non-critical alarms in the same joint alarm system may be a problem in engine monitoring and alarm systems on vessels. During modifications, changes may be made to alarms, whose associated risks are unrecognised.
Recommendation
In the future, during the design phase Suomen Lauttaliikenne Oy should use its quality management system to review any risks posed to alarm systems by modification work, and check the need for the official approval of modification work.

During the ordering process, the shipping company and equipment supplier should jointly determine the suitability of the system for meeting the needs and operating profile of the shipping company.
