Health requirements and health monitoring for tram drivers

There is very little regulation of health requirements for tram drivers, and these are mainly based on the requirements set by the operator. Based on the investigation, the demanding nature of the operating environment of tram traffic and, in particular, light rail tram systems such as tram line 15 has not been adequately recognised at an overall level in the drivers’ health requirements or their health monitoring.
The drivers’ irregular shift work requires regular age-based health monitoring that involves health examinations performed by occupational health nurses as well as examinations by an occupational health physician familiar with rail traffic.

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency define national health requirements and a health monitoring system for tram drivers with a risk-based approach.

The health requirements set for rail transport drivers can be used as the basis for the health requirements for tram drivers.
