Navy to provide SIAF assistance with underwater documentation

The Safety Investigation Authority, Finland will investigate the accident which occurred to M/S Amorella on 20 September 2020. As part of the investigation, the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland will examine the structures of the route and the conditions in the area where the accident happened. This requires underwater documentation in the area.

The Safety Investigation Authority, Finland has submitted a letter of request for executive assistance to the Finnish Defence Forces in accordance with section 42 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011). Due to the request, the Defence Command Finland has ordered the Finnish Navy to carry out the underwater filming in accordance with the letter of request for executive assistance. The filming will take place in the area of the Åland Islands. When operating in the area, the Navy will only carry out tasks in accordance with the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland’s letter of request for executive assistance.

The executive assistance provided by the Defence Forces is of primary importance to the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland. The Navy has first-class equipment and competence for the task needed by the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland. The kind of co-operation as described above is important for ensuring efficient use of resources in a small country like Finland. These resources can be used in versatile ways for various functions in society.
