Incident

Completed

On Wednesday, February 25, 1998, a group of nine freight wagons started to move by themselves at Saunakallio platform towards the south in the direction of Järvenpää station.

The group of wagons continued their rolling until they bumped against and broke the buffer stop of the trap siding of the easternmost track (track 4). The first empty open wagon of the group turned to the right over track 3, penetrating the gauge of track 2, which generated a hazardous situation for the IC7 train approaching from the south. In regular traffic track 3 is used as the main passage from south to north. The group of wagons damaged the cables in the cable conduit south of the buffer stop. No personal or environmental injury occurred.

The accident was a result of an insufficient securing of the wagons at a stand-still position, as specified in the relevant rules and regulations.
