Safety investigation of the fire at the Tampere waste recycling plant – focus on the management of waste flows
The Safety Investigation Authority (SIAF) has initiated an investigation into a fire that broke out at a waste recycling plant in the Rusko district in Tampere on 5 November 2024.
The fire in stored waste heaps lasted for several days, emitting harmful substances in the vicinity of residential areas.
“SIAF has investigated several fires. The investigation that has now been initiated is not so much focused on investigating the fire itself. The focus of the investigation is on managing the safety of waste flows, particularly the logistics and risk management of waste flows. The operations of public authorities will also be investigated,” says Timo Naskali, Head of Investigation.
The purpose of safety investigations is to improve public safety and prevent new accidents and incidents. Matters of guilt and liability will not be addressed in the investigation.
The Safety Investigation Authority will continue the investigation with the collection of background information and documents and with hearings.
The duration of the safety investigation is approximately 9 to 12 months.
