M2023-01 The grounding of road ferry 317 in Korppoo on 13 April 2023

Under section 2, subsection 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011), the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, has decided to initiate an investigation into the grounding of the road ferry L 317 in Retais, Korppoo, on 13 April 2023.

L 317 lost its manoeuvrability while approaching the Retais ferry berth in Korppo, and as a result, it drifted to the shore while damaging the pier structures nearby. The manoeuvrability of the ferry was restored successfully after the accident, and it returned to the Pärnäs ferry berth in Nauvo. The ferry was not carrying any passengers or cargo when the accident occurred. No personal or environmental damage was caused by the accident.

Expert Tero Haapalinna of the Safety Investigation Authority has been appointed as the Head of the Investigation Team, with expert Mirva Salokorpi as well as Safety Investigator Ilkka Kervinen as its members. Chief Safety Investigator Risto Haimila is the Investigator-in-Charge.
