The Safety Investigation Authority of Finland has decided to initiate an investigation under Section 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011) into a collision of a freight train with a tracked work machine doing trackwork between Puhos and Kesälahti on 9 December 2019.

A freight train en route from Joensuu to Kouvola collided with a multi-purpose tracked borer used for soil investigation that was on the tracks. The force of collision ejected the work machine off the tracks. There were no personal injuries. The work machine was damaged in the collision. The collision caused only minor damage to the locomotive, and the train was able to continue.

Safety Investigator Hannu Hänninen is appointed as the Head of investigation team, and Investigator Harri Pöysti is appointed as a member. The Investigator-in-charge is Esko Värttiö, Chief Rail Safety Investigator.
