The Safety Investigation Authority, Finland has decided to initiate an investigation under section 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011) into the derailment of a freight train that occurred in Vesanka in the west of Jyväskylä on 3 July 2021.
The six last wagons of the freight train were derailed at Vesanka on the track section between Jyväskylä and Petäjävesi. The derailed wagons damaged the track over a distance of 1.5 kilometres. In addition, the structures of one level crossing with warning devices were damaged. The derailment did not result in personal injuries.
Chief Inspector (ret.) Harri Pöysti is appointed as the Head of the Investigation Team and Erkki Rajamäki, M.Sc. A., Sampo Tukiainen, D.Sc. (Econ.) and technician Reijo Hämäläinen are appointed as members. Chief Rail Safety Investigator Esko Värttiö will be the Investigator-in-Charge until 31 October 2021, while Chief Safety Investigator Lasse Laatta will take the position starting from 1 November 2021.
