Currently there are no instructions concerning use of the handbrake in a situation where cars have to be released by ‘milking’ them to get the train moving. If there are cars in use whose handbrake breaks down if used when the air brakes are engaged, they should be modified to prevent such damage from occurring.

Recommendation

To ensure that the cars remain stationary while the brakes are released by ‘milking’, instructions on the use of the handbrake should be drawn up.
