On Monday August 7, 2000, having fallen off a wagon in movement on Hamina shunting yard, a train crew member was injured. After braking, the locomotive started to haul the wagons, and then a train crew member in the last wagon fell off the wagon to the track between the rails. As a result, he sustained contusions in the head.
The accident was caused by too fast an acceleration by the engine driver after rapid braking. In fact the acceleration generated such a strong jerk in the rear of the group of wagons, that the train crew member could not anticipate it, and hence he fell off the wagon.
In order to prevent corresponding accidents, the Accident Investigation Board of Finland suggests that in training, adequate working methods in shunting yard work be more strongly underscored.
