VR Group's safety management system and engine driver training should include more content relating to the mastery of human factors

The current safety management system and engine driver training have a scarcity of content related to the mastery of human factors. These include, for instance, maintaining situational awareness during the performance of one's work, recovery from shocking situations, and learning from deviations.

The Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) should demand that the subject matter of human factors will be emphasised more in both the safety management systems of railway operators and training in the field.

The importance of traffic safety in particular should be emphasised significantly more than it currently is in operations. The safety management systems must be brought to the level of each railway employee's work in such a manner that the reporting of incidents, open discussion of them, and learning from them are guaranteed at all organisational levels from the management to individual employees. Engine driver training and refresher training should pay significantly more attention than currently to train driving in exceptional situations, where the importance of human factors such as staff competence, stress management and decision-making are significantly increased with regard to safety. During engine driver training, it is important to make the driver's duties and role clear in
relation to the assisting safety systems, such as the ATP system, the role of which is as a passive system for ensuring safety, not a drive system.
